In a fashion similar to the skyscraper race in Dubai and Southeast Asia, Italy intends to establish itself in developing awe-inspiring structures by constructing the world’s longest suspension bridge. It will run over the Strait of Messina, from Italy to the island of Sicily, and will span over two miles. One of the most impressive aspects of the bridge are the two support beams, which will both be taller than the Empire State building. Planners for the bridge state that the completion date will be 2016.

When I heard this news, it brought to mind what I did this weekend, and that was visit the Griffith Park Observatory. I had never been there before this weekend, and I must say that I was impressed by what I saw. Displays of the many methods of astronomical study showed the history of the science and how far we have come in our understanding of the universe.

One discovery that’s been made by the astronomical community that I didn’t realize, or maybe I had heard it somewhere and forgot, was that the universe is expanding. This is being done by boosts of energy, which has been increasing ever since the beginning of the universe. It’s a never ending cycle.

What’s also interesting is that humans are composed of the same energy that makes up the universe. So it makes to total sense that this expansion in the universe could be causing us, as a species, to advance as well in our thought and creative capabilities. How else can it be explained that we keep topping ourselves when it comes to inventions and accomplishments? Who know what we will know in the years to come?

One shining example of this is the world’s longest suspension bridge that will built in Italy. It seems logical that Italy is where it would be located; after all, the origin of the design for suspension bridges (the arches) can be traced back to Ancient Rome. There must be some type of aura in that part of the world that inspires people to build bridges.

Perhaps we will never know what we are fully capable of, and that could be attributed to the fact the we, like the universe, could be expanding.
