The Devil and Tom Walker

Yes, I have been cast in another film. And this will definitely be a long leap away from some other projects I’ve acted in. The film is titledThe Devil and Tom Walker, and is an adaptation of the Washington Irving novel that goes by the same name. wealth.JPGIn the same vein of the classic story of Faust, the story revolves around a man named Tom Walker, who makes a deal with a character named Old Scratch, who is strongly hinted to be the devil. In return for the ability to gain wealth and fame, Tom Walker must eventually give his soul to Old Scratch.

I’m playing the role of Jed, a friend of Tom who suffers the consequences of Tom’s actions. Tom gains possession of Jed’s property through gambling, leaving my character in a state of ruin (Tom obviously wasn’t much of a friend.). However, Jed doesn’t take this misery lying down. You’ll have to watch the film if you want to find out what happens. I’ll be on site this upcoming weekend, so I expect the film to come be ready for viewing sometime late spring or early summer.

This story has depth on several levels. One of the foremost themes is the desire that people have always had to be able to obtain anything they wish. This story shows that not everything that glitters is gold, and success has a price. In the real world, there are hardly ever any overnight successes (Like the hooker who’s just made it big at the expense of the former New York governor. That was a fairly quick climb to the top.); they’re the exception not the rule. So the price of success is usually the blood, sweat, and tears that one has to put into a practice in order to bear any fruit from it.

But this story suggests that there is an even steeper price for people who get rich quick, or obtain it through no real work of their own. One of those prices is not gaining the ability to handle the wealth that they quickly accrued. Some may scoff at this suggestion, claiming that if they ever were to have access to an enormous bank account, they would be wise with their spending. But let us take a hard look at some in our society who actually do become rich this way. Paris Hilton. Britney Spears (Granted, she used her “talent” to get where she’s at, as opposed to Paris, who simply inherited her money.). I’ll admit that I used the most extreme cases, but the point I want to make is that it’s fascinating how a story, with roots that date back close to a thousand years ago, can still hold relevance in our world today.

So I guess what I’m trying to say is stories, films, books, etc. not only present new ideas for our culture, but it also reminds us of who we are and where we come from.

Now it’s time for our periodical Handry Kova update. After a successful shoot this past Thursday, we aim to have our next shoot on Sunday at the Cups coffee house on Lakeland Drive in Jackson, MS. I estimate that after the shoot on Sunday, we will have only more day of shooting before we go into post-production. More to come on the saga, known as The Extended Shooting of the Handry Kova Film! wrangler.JPGOn a final note, I was put on an audition tape for a Wrangler’s Jeans commercial that will feature Brett Favre, the recently retired quarterback of the Green Bay Packers. This is the first national commercial that I would be featured in, so I’m really hoping this one may go my way. One of the more important shots of the audition was one that featured my posterior while I was in a four-point stance. So if any of you ever wanted to see me catch passes from an NFL legend, all the while wearing tight jeans, pray hard that I get cast, because this may very well be a good chance for you to witness this. Giddy-up!
