Recent Merge of Politics and Media

Hi, my name is Guinn Terry Davis, and this is my blog where I talk about the usual, unusual, and per usual. That is a statement for all my first time readers. However, for those of you who are already familiar with me, I just spent a relaxing trip in MS to see friends and family. For those I saw, it was great seeing you; for those I didn’t see, my apologies and we will surely meet the next time I come. Say the Merge

I mentioned being out of Burbank since I missed out on President Obama’s visit when he appeared on the Tonight Show. Although it was on the other side of town of where I live, I imagine on Thursday it was quite an event. A president’s appearance on the Tonight Show marked the first time a current president was ever a guest on a late night television show. From what I saw, the President did well (save the Special Olympics remark, but hey, who hasn’t made a comment like that at least once in their life?).

Another event that happened on Friday that didn’t receive as much attention as President Obama’s late night appearance, but equally as significant in my opinion, was the cast of Battlestar Galactica joining representatives of the United Nations during their session. They spoke to the Assembly, stressing the importance of world unity during these times of duress. The highlight of this event was Edward James Olmos’ riveting speech in which he, the cast, and the United Nations punctuated with…

So say we all!

It’s no secret that media has an effect on the way people think and behave, but the events of this past week have taken it to another level. It seems that politicians are beginning to take an even more serious look at how media can be influential. And who can blame them. After all, many of the conventions that have been used in the past to reach people do not seem to be working fairly well right now. Couple that with the realization that more and more people, especially younger people, believe that they will find more substance in what Jon Stewart has to say about the current political landscape than CNN or Fox News.

Concerning President Obama, perhaps it his youth (compared to other presidents of the past) that has him utilizing the media in a new way. He has had his say on late night, making recommendations and predictions for college athletics, as well wining and dining with Hollywood celebrities and dignitaries. Democrats view him as a man that knows what it takes to relate to people, while Republicans believe this means that Obama has no clue as to what he’s doing.

However, what everyone can agree on is that the world around us is changing. Many of the lifestyle choices that we are used to making will either have to be changed or undergo a serious facelift. Choices such as job vocations – learn to make money online, folks. You heard it here first – investments, etc. So I commend Obama for thinking outside of the box on how to reach people with his message. Does he know what he’s doing? I hope so.
