My First L.A. Audition

August 15, 2008

After only being in this town for a week, I had my first audition for the Hollywood film business. I’ve had people tell me all sorts of things about this, such as:

“WOW! You’re moving on the fast track!”

“Cool.”

“Yeah, you and everyone else.”

If there’s an abundance of anything in L.A., it’s opinions.

At any rate, I interviewed with Image Development (ID), a talent promotion company. Their job, if they agree to work with you, is to promote you to agencies. Approaching an agent is easy enough, but getting them to listen to you or even return your calls is quite a task, so I’m told. However, agents, like most people, are more willing to work with someone that they trust, and Image Development has ‘developed’ quite a reputation over the years of grooming their clients well enought to impress many agents. It’s up to the actors then to impress the agents at an audition. This is a certifiable way an actor can get an agent.

So I went to Image Development on Wednesday to display my acting wares. I had to do a cold read audition for them. I didn’t necessarily pass with flying colors (yikes), but they did say they saw potential and were willing to work with me. This is good news. They also made some suggestions to take some acting classes, which was something I wanted to do anyway, and I decided to cast my lots with Barbara Cameron and Shelene Bryan, two reputable acting coaches who work out of Thousand Oaks, CA.

After tending to the bruise my ego received from my rough audition, I’ve started to feel pretty good about my involvement with Image Development. I found out about them through some friends of mine, whose son got signed on to an agency through this company. Also, I could tell from my audition that I was a little rusty with my acting skills (it’s been almost four years since I’ve taken an acting class!!), so getting some more training is definitely in order. So I think everything is working out as it should.

In other news, I finally got a place to stay in Burbank, CA. I will move in at the first of September. Details and photos to come.
