Look Out for Montezuma and His Revenge

Whenever you travel overseas, make sure that you take precaution in your diet, lest you become struck with Montezuma’ Revenge.

For those not familiar with the term Montezuma’s Revenge, it’s a popular nickname for ‘traveler’s diarrhea’. Although it isn’t fatal, it can be most unpleasant when you’re on your vacation and you have to take a multitude of unscheduled restroom stops.

While this disease can be the result of jetlag, change of diet, or fatigue, usually the cause is the result of the bacteria, E. Coli. Traveler’s diarrhea will often go away on it’s own in a matter of three or four days, but if it doesn’t, you should seek medical help. But why even go through that situation?! Here are some great diet tips to assist you in having a healthy and enjoyable vacation:

Never drink tap water when you’re visiting another country! Always drink liquids that come from bottles or cans, with seals that you have broken yourself. Also, be cautious about placing ice in your drinks!

Oddly enough, food poisoning is usually does not originate from eating foreign food, but from the germs on a plate that was washed in contaminated water. That being the case, it is preferable that you try to eat from a plate that doesn’t require washing (paper, plastic, etc.)

Some of the most delicious fruits and vegetables you’ll ever taste are found in foreign countries.

However, this can also be a major source of bacteria as well. The recommended fresh produce to eat are the ones you can peel such as bananas, avocados, and oranges.

Eat at a restaurant that is bustling with business. This is usually a sign that the restaurant is well-kept and sanitary.

Finally, try some of the local flavors. Contrary to popular belief, they are less likely to carry contaminants than American food. The locals are more familiar with cooking their own cuisine, thus there is a lesser chance of any mistakes being made.

Now that your equipped with this knowledge, you can tell Montezuma there is only room for you and your family/friends in the rental car and your vacation.
