Hard Work

October 21, 2007

When I write this it is 3:00 am, and I reflect on the day that I had just spent. Currently, I’m serving as Technical Director for Belhaven’s Music Dept. production of Gondoliers. We spent today building the set. I had a good time doing it. A lot of work and a lot of stress at some points, but isn’t that life. Why should building a set be any different? When you work hard (and smart) in life, you usually end up with good or better results. If you work hard (and smart) on a set, shouldn’t you end up with a good set? Makes sense to me anyway.

I fell asleep watching a movie earlier tonight. Once Upon a Time in the West is the name of it. It’s actually a good movie from what I saw; it’s supposed to have one of the greatest movie moments of all time according to AFI. I was just bushed. However, if you work hard (and smart) when watching a movie, it usually doesn’t determine if the movie’s going to be good or not. Funny how some things in life seem to parallel and some things don’t. But you sure can make quick work of popcorn. But if you work hard (and smart) eating popcorn, you usually get indigestion. I do anyway. So is hard work always a good thing?

These are questions I find myself pondering these days. Actually, just today. This moment as I write this entry. A fine example of a question lodged deep within me. One that I wasn’t even aware that I was seeking the answer. Had to think and excavate my mind to uncover it. It took working hard (and smart) to find it. So does working hard (and smart) give you good results and accomplishments, or just more questions and challenges? Funny thing, this hard (and smart) work.
