So it looks like the Writer’s Guild of America is actually going to go through with their strike. It was announced some time ago that this might happen; the producers and studios knew it was coming. Now it’s finally here. It’s like having to clean up your house; you put it off, knowing that company is coming over, and then when the doorbell rings, and you haven’t done a damn thing about it; what do you do? Tell them nobody’s home. Why not? It works in the movies, right?
Personally, I think both parties should act like adults and work out some sort of compromise. The studios make enough money to let go of some of it, and the writer’s should know that if they don’t write scripts, directors and actors and technicians won’t be able to make movies. Advertisers lose faith in the studios. Studios will have to start relying on non-union screenwriters for scripts, which aren’t bad, but not quite as good as the writers in the guild (there’s a reason they’re in the guild, right?). And most of all, no one’s gonna make any money! Isn’t that what movies are all about? Either solve this, or get ready for more reality shows.
They should form some sort of union filled with people who threaten to strike constantly. Call it SGA (Striker’s Guild of America). Anytime any union has a gripe, they can just throw into the problem cesspool known as SGA. Do you think you’re getting shafted out of money you’re due? Call SGA; they’ll present your case. In fact, I could see someone making a lot of money if they were paid to pronounce everyone’s problems. I don’t how the checks and balances would work (I just thought of this idea three minutes ago; gimme a break), but I’m sure it would be the solutions to all of Hollywood’s problems. Maybe, maybe not. Oh, well, time will tell, as the old writer once said. Hmm…what’s for lunch, I wonder?
But then what happens when SGA needs better dental benifits? Oh, the humanity!!
I’m looking forward to the moment when the SGA realizes that their clients are abusing them and go on strike by refusing to strike.
I think a 3 week SGA strike-strike could handle world hunger, immigration, and 2 Sierra Club fundraisers.
OK, Maybe only 1 fundraiser…
