Last night marked the end of the WhaleBone Tour, as BJ gave his swan performance (For the WhaleBone Tour, not permanently) at the Rancho del Rey Church in San Marcos, CA. It was definitely one of the better shows I have seen him perform.
His timing was impeccable; the risks were calculated just right. And the audience…oh, the audience…they loved him, they truly loved him! One was at awe when the rich language of the text immersed from his mouth, and if you listened carefully, you could hear majestic bells chiming in harmony with BJ’s delivery of the play. Ah, the theatre…
Anyways, we got up this morning, said our farewells to Steve and Karen Webber (wonderful hosts and friends. Go Ducks!), and headed out for L.A. Amazingly, it only took us an hour and a half to get from Carlsbad, CA to Playa del Rey, CA…finally. I feel like the tortoise. The end of the race. Slowly but surely. All that Jazz. Chicago. The Midwest. Where I drove through. Missouri, Kansas, etc. WhaleBone Tour, which led us to L.A.
Our first stop in the City of Angels was with BJ’s son, Ryan, and his band Goodbye Elliott, in Playa del Rey. They are an indie Hawaiian Rock band with a touch of 80′s influence and they are on the verge of some big things. You can check them out on their website or their Myspace page. Check them out as they perform at the House of Blues in L.A. on Wednesday night, August 5th.
Afterwards, BJ, Daniel (BJ’s other son, who’s been fishing up in Alaska this summer), and I went up to Simi Valley to spend the evening with Charles and Laurie Bentley, but not before we visited Tiana Alderson, and her father, John.
John works at Biola University and that is where we met them. Some of you may recall that I worked with Tiana on the Joshua Squad at Belhaven College. She was a good president for the Belhaven College Joshua Squad, and I think she will do well.
I write this entry from the household of the Bentley’s with reflection. The ten day journey that BJ and I embarked on has come to a close, and soon we will go our separate ways. In fact, I’ve been invited to go to Sea World tomorrow, while BJ will spend time with his Daniel and Ryan; and I’m happy for all of them…and myself.
After a long stretch of consistent blogging, I will be taking a break for the next couple of days. For those of you who want to talk to me, call me or send me a comment, and I will talk with you. I promise. Take care.
