Maria Luisa Park

As one of the oldest cities in Spain, Seville is equally known for its innovative and progressive thinking. During the 1920′s, the city of Seville decided to host the Spanish-American Exhibition, with the intent of displaying the industrial and architectural advances the city had made. That exposition served as a foundation for the growth Seville is presently experiencing, and one of the centerpieces of this growth is Maria Luisa Park.

Located in the southern end of Seville, a section of the city filled with gardens and boulevards, Maria Luisa Park is a half-mile long and consists of exotic trees such palms, orange trees, elms and Mediterranean pines. There is also an expanse of flower beds, hidden bowers, ponds and pavilions, all of which makes Maria Luisa Park not only the largest park in Seville, but also one of the most memorable and loveliest parks in Europe.

Terrorism and Australian Fires: Let’s Merge the Two!

Like two flailing corporations. Like two feudal lords who wished to gain more power and prestige. FOX News, along with many other news services, has decided to marry two hot topics to make a claim that’s a bit of a stretch, in my opinion.

Arson jihadists, hm? Terrorism, hm? Please, that is so early 2000′s.

Now if the news reported that the Al-Qaeda had to cut jobs because of the collapse of the world economy, then I would say the story had some merit to it. Terror Alert: Red, Orange and Yellow Levels! However, I think this is the result of the media wanting to save money on paper and ink by merging two stories together. That way they could make room in the periodical for what Britney Spears did last night.

So why am I bashing this story so? Because it’s just another example of the media trying to slant a story to incite fear into the people. And there’s no escaping this bias either, no matter who you are. If you’re a conservative, you can be rest assured that FOX News will ease, or confirm, any sort of anxiety you may be having. If you’re liberal, then the networks and CNN is the place for cold, hard facts.

There Was an Old Woman Who Lived in an Iraqi Journalist Shoe-Throwing Monument

There was an old woman who lived in a shoe

she had so many children, she didn’t know what to do

so she raised up a bronze shoe monument

dedicated to a news reporter who threw a shoe at our former President.

You’ll have to pardon the attempt at poetry on my part. It’s been awhile since I read Mother Goose (the artist from whom I sampled). However, inspiration struck me as I read about the controversial monument of a shoe at an Iraqi orphanage. Merrily We Roll Along! As the poem states, it WAS dedicated to the Iraqi journalist who threw a shoe at George W. Bush last month during a press conference.

I emphasize the word “was” because it today’s news reported that the Iraqi government has ordered the monument to be dismantled. The last time a statue in Iraq made the news, it was when Saddam Hussein’s larger than life effigy was torn down in 2003. Apparently the expected life span of a statue in Iraq is not very long. The government’s reasoning for removing the shoe was that a monument of political bias should not be on government property.

Hmmm. A political statue should not be on government property. Does anyone else see the contradiction in this reasoning? It seems like when the Iraqi government was drafting the constitution for their new “democracy”, they mistook the word politics for religion.
