Friendship Bread (The WhaleBone Tour Commences)

The entry to this blog has journeys as its theme. Just as the journey of a thousand miles start with a single step, so does the journal of a thousand words begin with a single letter. At 9:00 am yesterday morning, BJ Johnston and yours truly embarked on the long awaited WhaleBone Tour, which has been mentioned in previous blogs on this site. Our tour commenced in Jackson, Mississippi and will end in Los Angeles, California, which is where I will reside indefinitely. The uniqueness of this trip lies not only in the trip itself, but in the development and planning as well. BJ and I started rolling the ball on this project in mid-June (which is fairly short notice for those of you who have never put a tour together before), and since then gigs have been booked for his one-man show, The Man From Aldersgate, in Kansas City, Albuquerque, and San Diego. There are many places that we will stop at along the way to rest, see friends, etc. As the days go by on this tour, I will post events for each individual day, along with some other tidbits.

Pensacola Performance

While in Florida this weekend, I had the privilege to see my good friend, Lee Farrar Bailey, a tenor, perform a concert at Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church in Pensacola, Florida. I’ve known Lee since my Belhaven days, and I remember him as a performer who was highly sought after, especially in the field of music. And when he decided which event he would be performing at, instantly that event had an extra ounce of credibility. In fact, Lee was also responsible for one of my shows being produced, Geraniums and Wrens, several years ago in Madison, Mississippi. So I believe it goes without question that I have nothing but good things to say about the guy.

Florida, the Sunshine State

That’s what the sign said to the right of the interstate. Apparently, I was welcome to enter this land. All the while, my windshield wiper was wiping off rain. We’ve been blessed with rain in the southeast U.S. for the past couple of days.

I enjoy Florida every time I come down. This time I’m going to spend time with my many of my cousins, who hail from Georgia, Idaho, Tennessee, etc. I will be down here until Monday. If there are any zany stories that crop up (which I’m sure there will be), I’ll post it when I get back to Jackson on Tuesday. Let me put it to you like this, the house I’m staying at is only a five minute walk from the ocean. But I’m really glad that I’m getting to see my family members before I make my trek out west.

The guy in this picture is Larry. He was a bartender at the restaurant I ate at tonight (the restaurant won’t let me post the name for legal reasons). Some guy didn’t pay his liquor tab. The results weren’t very pretty.

I’m leaving for L.A. in thirteen days…and counting…

Relocating to the West Coast

For months, it’s been in the making…secretly. Slowly, quietly, I’ve waited to see the pieces fall together and see if this was truly where I was supposed to go, before I made any sort of announcement. Alas, the pieces have come, and many (not all yet) of them have come together to form a somewhat clear picture. My dear readers, Guinn Terry Davis will be relocating from Jackson, MS at the end of this month to the greater Los Angeles, California area. I have been there several times in the past, so I’ve seen alot of the sites and have a good idea of what life is like out there. And I think I’m going to enjoy it. What’s funny is the place that it appears I’ll be staying at (I say appears because it’s still in the works, but I’ll let you know as soon as I do) is only about twenty minutes away from where I spent my previous times in L.A.

Why, Guinn? Why? That is the question I get from many people when I tell them this news, and there are two reasons, nay, three reasons why I’m doing this:
